Let's talk about low maintenance friends. Personally I do think low maintenance is possible, but they won't be friends that you run to 1st for any sort of help. Also I think they fall in to the acquaintance category for me, because I strongly believe in communication between friends. So low maintenance friends can only be acquaintance in my book.
